Well, there you go. It makes the several hundred hours spent writing this third edition seem a fantastic investment. The life of an author, it’s not all flashbulbs and glamour, you know. So what’s changed for edition number three? The major changes include a rewrite to incorporate non-invasive imaging as the predominant method of diagnostic investigation. It’s truly remarkable to think that in the first edition in 2000 non-invasive imaging barely featured and we now rarely start an intervention without a previous CT or MR angiogram. We have also expanded the focus on Interventional Oncology and are extremely grateful to Tarun Sabharwal for agreeing to contribute the chapter on tumour ablation. We certainly learnt a lot about tumour ablation and extend our thanks to Tarun for dealing with our ‘shock and awe’ editing style with diplomacy and tact. As the book, and we, get older it’s been harder and harder to stop the mid-life bulge appearing. We’ve done our best to keep the weight down and maintain an easy-to-read style that many, well at least several, readers have kindly complimented us on. We do hope you enjoy this new edition and hope you agree it’s even better than “not bad.” *Trainee

This book provides easily accessible technique specific information on interventional radiology (IR) procedures at a basic level for medical students and junior doctors. It covers subject topics in both vascular and non-vascular interventional radiology appropriate for a non-specialist audience. Case based contents help to introduce IR techniques and demonstrate the role of minimally invasive therapy in the overall clinical management. Pre and post-procedural patient assessments are also included in the chapters to enhance patient safety and early detection of complications. Interventional Radiology treatments now play a major role in many disease processes and continues to grow with new procedures added to the armamentarium of the interventional radiologist, almost on a yearly basis. Interventional radiology because of its pivotal role in medical care, requires its own teaching curriculum. Recognising this, the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology Society of Europe (CIRSE) devised an undergraduate curriculum in IR, specifically designed for teaching medical students. This book will be primarily of benefit to medical students. In addition, it will also be of help to non-radiology junior hospital doctors and general practitioners.

This textbook offers a comprehensive guide to interventional radiology (IR) for medical students, residents, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and fellows. IR is constantly evolving to meet the growing demands of patient care by applying cutting-edge technology to minimally invasive image-guided procedures. A dynamic specialty, interventional radiology has gained significant traction and interest in recent years, with combined IR/DR residencies rising to meet the increasing demand. This book addresses this growing need for a reference in IR, allowing students to gain a solid foundation to prepare them for their careers. The book is divided into two main sections, with many images and key point boxes throughout that offer high-yield pearls along with the specific How To's necessary for practice. The first section is designed to give readers an introduction to IR, including radiation safety, commonly used devices, patient care, and anatomy. The second portion divides into sections covering major body areas, diseases, conditions, and interventions. These chapters cover procedures including pathophysiology, indications for treatment, as well as alternative treatments before delving into interventional therapy. IR Playbook gives medical students, residents, and trainees a full perspective of interventional radiology.
