More than any of their contemporaries, Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron are challenging the boundaries between architecture and art. Natural History explores that challenge, examining how the work of this formidable pair has drawn upon the art of both past and present, and brought architecture into dialogue with the art of our time. Echoing an encyclopedia, this publication reflects the natural history museum structure of the exhibition which it accompanies, organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture. Models and projects by Herzog & de Meuron, as well as by other artists, are structured around six thematic portfolios that suggest an evolutionary history of the architects' work: Appropriation & Reconstruction, Transformation & Alienation, Stacking & Compression, Imprints & Moulds, Interlocking Spaces, and Beauty & Atmosphere. Each section is introduced with a statement from Herzog, and more than 20 artists, scholars, and architects have contributed essays, including Carrie Asman, Georges Didi-Huberman, Kurt W. Forster, Boris Groys, Ulrike Meyer Stump, Peggy Phelan, Thomas Ruff, Rebecca Schneider, Adolf Max Vogt, and Jeff Wall.

The first major new overview of Eliasson in more than ten years engages with the artist's ongoing interest in finding visionary shapes for abstract ideas. This richly illustrated publication presents a spectacular journey through spheres, tunnels, towers, walkways and archways, as well as pavilions and larger buildings realized by Eliasson and his studio since the late 1990s. Binding the spiralling dynamic of these works together are essays by renowned writers across a variety of fields - from geologists and historians of art and science to architects, artists and philosophers. Each work is presented through in-depth project descriptions, and complemented by Eliasson's own words. Produced in close collaboration with the artist and his studio, this special volume will attract collectors, art students and designers of all disciplines

Olafur Eliasson: Reality machines was conceived and designed by Irma Boom, one of the world's most celebrated graphic designers, to bring to life in book form the artwork and ideas of Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. The exhibition catalogue - published by Moderna Museet and Koenig Books on the occasion of the exhibition Verklighetsmaskiner / Reality machines, at Moderna Museet in Stockholm - takes the form of an artist's book in which essays and images interact with tactile papers and transparent films. Eliasson's diverse artworks - in sculpture, painting, photography, film, and installations - have been exhibited widely throughout the world. His art is driven by a deep interest in perception, movement, embodied experience, and feelings of self, and by his conviction that art offers a crucial means for turning thinking into doing in the world. Not limited to the confines of the museum and gallery, his practice engages the broader public sphere through architectural projects and interventions in civic space. This catalogue features illuminating essays by Timothy Morton, philosopher and specialist in ecology and object-oriented ontology, and Matilda Olof-Ors, curator at Moderna Museet in Stockholm, as well as a conversation between Eliasson and Daniel Birnbaum, director of Moderna Museet. Anders Sune Berg's installation photography presents vivid views of the exhibition Verklighetsmaskiner / Reality machines at Moderna Museet.

As part of its BMW H2R research project, Studio Olafur Eliasson is preparing a dense publication comprising extensive visual material; excerpts from two seminars held in 2006/07; and conversations between Olafur Eliasson and a number of distinguished thinkers, such as architect and artist Yona Friedman, urban theorist Bart Lootsma, and Head of Design BMW Christopher Bangle. In the research project, Eliasson raises questions of formgiving and materiality, mobility, temporality, movement, and renewable energy. The aim is not so much to examine the car as object, as to integrate the vehicle in a complex set of social, historical, political, and economic relations. In 2005 a BMW H2R hydrogen-powered vehicle was delivered to Studio Olafur Eliasson and then stripped bare of its outer shell. To create a new skin several form studies have been carried out in a temporary geodesic dome, constructed in the yard of the studio. The final surface of the car consists of layers of ice, frozen around two intricate nets, mirrored plates and light. The a oeClimate cara can only exist in a microclimate with a temperature of minus 6 degrees Celsius or below.

The volume is completed with an extensive interview by the exhibitions curators, the artists sketches and preparatory drawings for the show, a biography, bibliography, and list of works. Studio Olafur Eliasson - Open House is one of Eliasson's contributions to the Venice Biennale 2017 This beautifully bound and printed artist?s book is the seventh volume in the studio's TYT [Take Your Time] series. Edited in collaboration with the independent curator Joanna Warsza, this self-portrait of the studio gives an idea of how Eliasson's artworks are made and thought about before they enter museums, collections, public space, and the world. In doing so, the publication reverses the relationship between final artworks and artistic processes and includes conversations with many members of the studio team, texts by friends of the studio, and quotes from texts and books that inspire the studio?s current research.

Architecture is increasingly understood to be a sensual, spatial experience, which means that the experience of buildings and spatial constellations is also a perception of atmospheres that are rated as positive or negative. Architects, planners, investors, and politicians must produce effects such as these according to intersubjective and communicable criteria, and not intuitively or randomly. Architectural Atmospheres addresses the growing awareness of the atmospheric dimension of architecture and provides a current, programmatic discussion of this topic. What possibilities does this approach open to architecture, what value does this knowledge have? Three essays and a conversation lead a cross-discipline discussion on the impact of architecture, and contribute to the debate first initiated by Peter Zumthor. The texts are accompanied by thirty-five color images that capture architectural moods in a variety of ways. Gernot Böhme is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Darmstadt Technical University and Director of the Institute for Practical Philosophy, e.V., Ipph, in Darmstadt, Germany. Christian Borch is Professor of Political Sociology at the Department of Management, Politics, and Philosophy, Copenhagen Business School, Denmark. Olafur Eliasson is a Danish-Icelandic artist. Eliasson incessantly explores our modes of perceiving. His work spans photography, installation, sculpture, and film. Juhani Pallasmaa is one of Finland's most distinguished architects and architectural thinkers.

When documentary photographer Matt Black interviews current artists, it's personal. His perceptive queries prompt artists to reveal intriguing pieces of their journeys. Damien Hirst shares the motivation behind his spot paintings; Robert Longo reflects on the symbolism in his work and the Men in the Cities series that brought him recognition. The conversations are casual, comfortable, and insightful. Illustrated with the artists' work, artists in their studios, and shots from Black's video interviews, Reflections is a unique foray from the printed page into the world of the cinematic, and a work of art in itself.
