What started as a request for an out-of-print book evolved into a 20-year friendship between Helene Hanff, a freelance writer living in New York, and Frank Doel, a used-book dealer in London.
Nach der Veröffentlichung von Peter Handkes ‚Der kurze Brief zum langen Abschied‘ im Jahr 1972 fand sich die aus dem Filmjargon stammende Genre-Bezeichnung „Roadmovie“ in kaum einer der Rezensionen. Im Allgemeinen versuchte man sich stattdessen mit den Begriffen literarischer Gattungen zu behelfen, die traditionellerweise mit dem Reisemotiv in Verbindung stehen. Auch im Rahmen der Veröffentlichung von Christian Krachts ‚Faserland‘ im Jahr 1995 wurde der Begriff ‚Roadmovie‘ kaum verwendet. Immerhin wurde Krachts Roman vereinzelt, wie beispielsweise in einer Rezension in ‚Der Spiegel‘, in Zusammenhang mit Jack Kerouacs Roadmovie-Roman ‚On the Road‘ gebracht. Mittlerweile scheint sich der Begriff ‚Roadmovie‘ bei Literaturkritikern etabliert zu haben. In der Folge der Veröffentlichung von Thomas Klupps ‚Paradiso‘ (2009), einem der erfolgreichsten Roadmovie-Romane der jüngeren Vergangenheit, fand er sich in der Mehrheit der Rezensionen. Trotz der zunehmenden Verbreitung des Begriffs ‚Roadmovie‘ sowie der seit den 1960er-Jahren anhaltenden Popularität der Roadmovie-Romane bei der deutschen Leserschaft finden sich im deutschsprachigen Raum erstaunlicher Weise kaum literaturwissenschaftliche Untersuchungen, die sich ausführlich mit den Eigenheiten des Genres auseinandersetzen. Da das ‚Leitmedium‘ des Genres spätestens seit den 1970er-Jahren der Film war und es sich zudem ursprünglich um ein dezidiert amerikanisches Genre handelte, ist die überwiegende Mehrheit wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten über das Roadmovie filmwissenschaftlichen Ursprungs und wurde zumeist von amerikanischen Autoren verfasst. Die vorliegende Studie beschreibt in einem funktionsgeschichtlichen Ansatz die Entwicklung des Roadmovies im Kontext der gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Dazu werden unter anderem die sozialwissenschaftlichen Theorien Ulrich Becks, Gerhard Schulzes und Heiner Keupps mit in die Untersuchung einbezogen. Nach einem einleitenden Teil mit komparatistischer Perspektive, in dem das Roadmovie in Film und Literatur anhand der Beispiele des Films ‚Easy Rider‘ sowie Jack Kerouacs Roman ‚On the Road‘ eingeführt wird, widmet sich die Arbeit der Entwicklung des ‚deutschen Roadmovies‘.
