Helen Heran Jun explores how the history of U.S. citizenship has positioned Asian Americans and African Americans in interlocking socio-political relationships since the mid nineteenth century. Rejecting the conventional emphasis on ‘inter-racial prejudice,’ Jun demonstrates how a politics of inclusion has constituted a racial Other within Asian American and African American discourses of national identity. Race for Citizenship examines three salient moments when African American and Asian American citizenship become acutely visible as related crises: the ‘Negro Problem’ and the ‘Yellow Question’ in the mid- to late 19th century; World War II-era questions around race, loyalty, and national identity in the context of internment and Jim Crow segregation; and post-Civil Rights discourses of disenfranchisement and national belonging under globalization. Taking up a range of cultural texts—the 19th century black press, the writings of black feminist Anna Julia Cooper, Asian American novels, African American and Asian American commercial film and documentary—Jun does not seek to document signs of cross-racial identification, but instead demonstrates how the logic of citizenship compels racialized subjects to produce developmental narratives of inclusion in the effort to achieve political, economic, and social incorporation. Race for Citizenship provides a new model of comparative race studies by situating contemporary questions of differential racial formations within a long genealogy of anti-racist discourse constrained by liberal notions of inclusion.

Much of the work in this book has originated from an international project called "Education for Teachers". Educational researchers from Holland, USA, Australia and Israel look at an important element of teacher behaviour - that is the interpersonal actions which create and maintain a positive classroom atmosphere. The book uses systems theory and family therapy to analyze what happens in classrooms, looking at classes as "big families". It provides a simple way to collect feedback from participants in communication in education (students, teachers, principles, student-teacher supervisors). Thus for example, differences between students' perceptions and the teachers self-perception of the teacher communication style are are formed. This feedback can be used to improve teaching. The book reviews research on communication styles of teachers in secondary education with the help of the questionnaire on teacher interaction and includes implications for teacher programs.

Smart, warm, telling, and funny, Funny, Your Don't Look Like a Grandmother is the perfect bouquet for today's grandmother, that active and interesting woman who is old enough to be somebody's grandmother and young enough to run around the world. Lois Wyse's new book, charmingly illustrated by Lilla Rogers, is a collection of wit and wisdom for today's Nana, Grandma, Goo-Goo, or Gran. How can you recognize today's grandmother? Easy, says Wyse. The grandmother is the one who goes out more and complains less than her daughter. In the spirit of Erma Bombeck and Bill Cosby, Lois Wyse tells loving and amusing stories that illustrate the joys of contemporary grandmothering. According to Lois Wyse, "A mother becomes a true grandmother the day she stops noticing the terrible things her children do because she is so enchanted with the wonderful things her grandchildren do." Contemporary grandmothers and their children and grandchildren will see themselves in these reflections of family life that include everything from how it feels to become a grandmother to gentle advice on parenting and career grandmothers. Funny, You Don't Look Like a Grandmother is the first nontraditional book about grandmothers who may not look like grandmothers -- but who love as deeply as the generations of grannies who preceded them. From the bestselling author of The Lost Regiment series comes a factually based narrative of the black military experience in the Civil War. We Look Like Men of War "I was born a slave, as was my father before me, but I shall die a free man...." Thus begins the poignant story of Samuel Washburn, born a slave in 1850. A young master's cruelty leads to an unforeseen confrontation, which forces Sam and his cousin to flee the plantation. They run north to freedom, only to return south to fight for the greater cause. Though still a boy, Sam becomes a regimental drummer with a "colored regiment" and sees action in the Wilderness campaign at Fredericksburg and Petersburg, as well as at the bloody Battle of the Crater in July of 1864. Sam's voice offers a unique and insightful perspective on the carnage of the War Between the States and the toll it took on both young and old, black and white. In near-future Wichita, USA, Henry Thorner, a world-weary ‘consultant’ is charged with finding a genius young hacker named Tanner Griffen, who disappeared after pulling off a daring data theft. The data was stolen from OraCorp, the most powerful company in the world and owners of ‘Ora’, the all-encompassing social network that tracks the activity and thoughts of every person in the Western world. When Tanner is placed at the scene of a murder hundreds of miles away by the Ora network, nobody is more surprised than Tanner himself. Consultant, hacker and hired muscle – a damaged young girl called Jeopardy – must reach the murderous Tanner before the OraCorp security forces to find out who, or what, is responsible. Part noir detective story, part science fiction, and part social commentary, It Looks Like You’re Writing a Letter deals with the big questions of our increasingly connected world – are we more than our social profile, and how comfortable should we be with the corporations who own our digital souls?

An unusual and uncommonly moving family memoir, with a twist that give new meaning to hindsight, insight, and forgiveness. Heather Sellers is face-blind-that is, she has prosopagnosia, a rare neurological condition that prevents her from reliably recognizing people's faces. Growing up, unaware of the reason for her perpetual confusion and anxiety, she took what cues she could from speech, hairstyle, and gait. But she sometimes kissed a stranger, thinking he was her boyfriend, or failed to recognize even her own father and mother. She feared she must be crazy. Yet it was her mother who nailed windows shut and covered them with blankets, made her daughter walk on her knees to spare the carpeting, had her practice secret words to use in the likely event of abduction. Her father went on weeklong "fishing trips" (aka benders), took in drifters, wore panty hose and bras under his regular clothes. Heather clung to a barely coherent story of a "normal" childhood in order to survive the one she had. That fairy tale unraveled two decades later when Heather took the man she would marry home to meet her parents and began to discover the truth about her family and about herself. As she came at last to trust her own perceptions, she learned the gift of perspective: that embracing the past as it is allows us to let it go. And she illuminated a deeper truth-that even in the most flawed circumstances, love may be seen and felt. Watch a Video

Henry Wiggen, the bedraggled six-foot-three, 195-pound, left-handed pitcher for the New York Mammoths, returns to narrate another novel in his inimitable manner. Fans who loved him in Bang the Drum Slowly, The Southpaw, and A Ticket for a Seamstitch (all Bison Books) will cheer his comeback. Wiggen is now thirty-nine, a fading veteran with a floating fastball, a finicky prostate, and other intimations of mortality. Released from the Mammoths after nineteen years, the twenty-seventh winningest pitcher in baseball history (tied at 247 victories with Joseph J. "Iron Man" McGinnity and John Powell), Wiggen is not ready to hang up his glove. What impels Henry to pitch against Pate, to trek to California and as far as Japan? He still has a few seasons, a few innings left anyway. Is he principled or possessed? You'll have to decide for yourself as author Mark Harris plays out Wiggen's midlife crisis on familiar American turf: the baseball diamond.

What do you see when you think of teacher? Where does what you see come from? This is a book about the images of teachers and teaching which permeate the everyday lives of children and adults, shaping in important but unrecognised ways their notions of whom teachers are and what they do. The authors show how, using a creative interdisciplinary approach, it is possible to analyse drawings of teachers, television programmes, films, cartooons, comics and even Barbie dolls. Illustrated with colour reproductions and excerpts from interviews and journals, this book should appeal to teachers, academics and anyone who is interested in the popular culture of childhood, gender issues, professional identity and teacher education.
