Flinders Petrie began his long association with ancient Egypt and the Near East when he went to Giza to survey the pyramids in 1880. Until his death in 1942, he dug almost continuously, having investigated more than fifty sites. The methods that he employed were to revolutionize Egyptian archaeology, laying down basic principles that were to influence the likes of Heinrich Schliemann and Arthur Evans. The letters and journals that make up this book have been selected by Margaret Drower for the picture they paint of living in Egypt and Palestine over a period of sixty years. They describe Petrie's austere approach to excavating and reveal what life was like on one of his digs where creature comforts were practically non-existent. Married in 1897, the accounts and letters of his wife Hilda provide another perspective to dig life. Her letters to family and friends, and especially those to her children, tell of their experiences, the people that worked alongside them, visitors to the digs, dealing with workmen, villagers and bureaucracy. Above all they reveal how she took to life alongside her husband like a duck to water.

Guy Delisle's work for a French animation studio requires him to oversee production at various Asian studios on the grim frontiers of free trade. His employer puts him up for months at a time in 'cold and soulless' hotel rooms where he suffers the usual deprivations of a man very far from home. After Pyongyang, his book about the strange society that is North Korea, Delisle turned his attention to Shenzhen, the cold, urban city in Southern China that is sealed off with electric fences and armed guards from the rest of the country. The result is another brilliant graphic novel - funny, scary, utterly original and illuminating.

The Irish Potato Famine of the 1840s has been popularly perceived as a genocide attributable to the British gov't. In professional historical circles, however, such singular thinking was dismissed many years ago. And while British governmental sins of omission & commission during the famine played their part, there is a broader context of land agitation & regional influences of class conflict within Ireland that also contributed to the starvation of more than a million people. This book opens a door to understanding all sides of this tragedy with an absorbing history that is supported by a collection of key documents. An important piece of revisionist that is sure to become the classic primer for this lamentable period of Irish history.

This Is Parenting on Your Own Terms Chances are, you'd rather not forfeit your happy, rested life the moment you become a parent. As a mom, you may want to keep your career, but aren't sure how to balance it with housework and childcare. As a dad, you probably want to witness your child's milestones, but a demanding job may get in the way. And what about time for yourself (never mind your sex life)? Marc and Amy Vachon were determined to beat this scenario when their first child was born. They vowed to sidestep the world's expectations of new parents and create a parenthood model that worked for them. Their strategy was to share everything-the good and the bad. They became peers in each area of parenthood: childcare, housework, and breadwinning. They also made time for themselves, and for each other. They shared the burdens so nobody was overwhelmed, and the joys so neither missed out on the fun. Drawing on Marc and Amy's experiences, as well as those of dozens of ESP couples, Equally Shared Parenting shows you how to create a balanced life that is rarely experienced by today's parents. It's not just about who vacuums and who does the dishes, or who brings in the paycheck and who tends to the kids. You'll learn how to look at every aspect of parenthood, money, careers, and your individual needs, so you can build a life that works for you both.
