Perfection in Simplicity Tadao Ando's complete works from 1975 until today Discover the completely unique aesthetic of Tadao Ando, the only architect ever to have won the discipline's four most prestigious prizes: the Pritzker, Carlsberg, Praemium Imperiale, and Kyoto Prize. Philippe Starck defines him as a "mystic in a country which is no longer mystic." Philip Drew calls his buildings "land art" as they "struggle to emerge from the earth." His designs have been described as haiku crafted from concrete, water, light, and space. But to Ando, true architecture is not expressed in metaphysics or beauty, but rather through space that embodies physical wisdom. This thoroughly updated 2018 edition spans the breadth of his entire career, including such stunning new projects as the Shanghai Poly Grand Theater and the Clark Center at Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Each project is profiled through photographs and architectural drawings to explore Ando's unprecedented use of concrete, wood, water, light, space, and natural forms. Featuring designs from award-winning private homes, churches, museums, and apartment complexes to cultural spaces throughout Japan, Korea, France, Italy, Spain, and the USA, this XXL-sized tribute is the definitive overview of this Modernist master. The Five Classics associated with Confucius formed the core curriculum in the education of Chinese literati throughout most of the imperial period. In this book Michael Nylan offers a sweeping assessment of these ancient texts and shows how their influence spread across East Asia. Nylan begins by tracing the formation of the Five Classics canon in the pre-Han and Han periods, 206 B.C.–A.D. 220, revising standard views on the topic. She assesses the impact on this canon of the invention of a rival corpus, the Four Books, in the twelfth century. She then analyzes each of the Five Classics, discussing when they were written, how they were transmitted and edited in later periods, and what political, historical, and ethical themes were associated with them through the ages. Finally she deliberates on the intertwined fates of Confucius and the Five Classics over the course of the twentieth century and shows how the contents of the Five Classics are relevant to much newer concerns.

What is water? Our perceptions of this 'stuff' that is so vital to our existence vary widely. Water is scarcely perceived, if at all, in our cultural landscape unless it has changed from its usual state. Humanity has always been fully aware that water is

Designers and architects have to make decisions regarding color every day. But how does one find the necessary inspiration? The appropriate color? How do other designers and artists deal with the issue? With Chroma, the Greek word for color, as its title, this illustrated book provides answers to these questions and makes it clear that color is much more than mere decoration – it is one of the central problems of creative work. In the process, Chroma embraces the sensuous experience of color, inspiring and seducing the reader with unusual projects, from industrial products to color field painting. The book presents works by younger designers like Stefan Diez and Arik Levy as well as famous artists like Ellsworth Kelly. All of the works are presented in large-scale reproductions and also in a kind of color gradient, in which they are assigned to the chapters "monochromatic," "multichromatic," and "achromatic." The spectrum encompasses all conceivable shades and combinations, from brilliant and colorful through tasteful and subdued all the way to black-and-white contrasts. An additional chapter analyzes the work of outstanding artists, architects, and designers like Gerhard Richter, Konstantin Grcic, and Sauerbruch Hutton, who grapple with color to an unusual degree and have formulated characteristic chromatic worlds. An alphabetical index provides background information on the artists and studios selected.

Niklaus Troxler is internationally known as one of the best contemporary Swiss graphic designers. In fact, he is one of a diminishing number of Swiss designers whose international reputation is founded primarily on their poster design work. Troxler's posters, which are closely linked with the Jazz Festival Willisau, are regarded as outstanding in their impact, symbolism, and expressive force. His pieces can be found in major museum and private collections. This publication presents an extremely comprehensive series of jazz posters, and bears witness to the eminence of Niklaus Troxler within the tradition of Swiss poster design.

Text in English & German. The architects in the Viennese Coop Himmelb(l)au team have felt committed to the credo of constructing cities and buildings that float like clouds ever since the practice was founded in 1968, though it did take a while before gently curving, "floating" buildings became a reality. It was not until new, computer-aided design and building methods and the use of innovative building materials came along recently that it became possible to realise even unthinkable architectural hybrids so light that they actually do seem to float. So the new Musée des Confluences is currently under construction in Lyon, a cloud that has been in the planning phase for some years. And a cloud building like this also does exist in reality in Munich in the form of the new BMW World, conceived by Coop Himmelb(l)au and recently opened. This new building completes the spectacular trio of museum buildings, the Mercedes-Benz and the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, by UNStudio and Delugan Meissl Associated Architects respectively. A series of excellent interior and exterior photographs provide a record of this demonstration project by BMW. The urban-sculptural and internal spatial qualities of the new BMW World are also analysed thoroughly, and dealt with in detail in the contexts of Coop Himmelb(l)au's older and more recent work. The question is also addressed of the extent to which the structural and material shape of the building actually corresponds with an image of something light enough to float. The presentation is rounded off by a digression into the world of "branding", which has learned how to use spectacular architecture more and more directly as a publicity factor, and to convey an image, or as an artefact.

Text in English & German. The challenges facing the 21st century are staggering: rapidly increasing population, mounting social instability due to global imbalances of wealth and welfare, resource scarcity and resulting conflicts related to their exploitation and distribution, and certainly the ongoing distress of the environment as a whole. Such severe conditions, including climate change, continue to become greater in number, complexity, and clarity, even though most of them had already been introduced as areas of concern in the 1970s and 1980s. Part I of the book describes potential strategies that will play an essential role in curbing carbon emissions, reducing -- or replacing -- fossil fuel usage. To better understand the current global energy industry, the book is unique in showing energy consumption data across the globe in comparable units, and it explains how fossil fuels could be replaced by renewable energy resources. Part II explains how the necessary significant reductions in energy consumption can be achieved by alternative means at reasonable cost for power generation to be maintained. A great number of projects are described in the book as case studies that fulfil the variety of international energy codes. Part III addresses the technological possibilities for energy savings and resource-sensitive solutions related to buildings. Here, the potential of building-integrated solar systems, wind-power generation, rain-water harvesting, and the use of geothermal energy, as well as their implementation in the architecture are presented in detail. On the one hand, the book presents the background for a broader understanding of the medium-range and long-range changes in our energy landscape, and on the other it provides the basis for avenues required to enable us to design strategies based on local conditions and individual geographical locations. Over the past 20 years, Klaus Daniels and the engineers of his engineering consultancy HL Technik have published four volumes of seminal work related to this subject, and their work is continuously being updated. In this series, the new book is an attempt to illustrate how modern architecture needs to be adaptive to energy conditions and how design and technology can be blended successfully.

Simply Design approaches design from the point of view of architectural theory, clarifying the relevance of design elements and providing a reference framework for them. It proposes a methodological approach that focuses on the design process, group-ing a range of architectural design concepts, strategies, and methods into five approach-es. The subjects of creating place, programming, forming + joining, choreographing, and staging are presented as an open and non-hierarchical system, based on examples of architectural projects. This book explains concepts and ideas, describes design methods, and illuminates their complex interrelation, in order to extract transferable design approaches, open up ideas, and provide inspiration. This key publication is targeted towards architects, students, and those interested in the theory and practice of architecture. With contribution by Margitta Buchert, Verena Brehm, Felix Hoepner and Laura Kienbaum.

Since the mid-1980s, Austrian wine production has been explosive--garnering stellar reviews, awards and record export revenues. Contemporary architects have found the country ripe with opportunity for further experimentation in the field of wine architecture, which emerged in Napa Valley in the 1990s and became renowned with the 2001 Pritzker Prize-winning, Herzog and de Meuron-designed Dominus Winery (deemed "a combination of sensorial and intellectual pleasure" by Pritzker judge Jorge Silvetti). This publication presents a selection of nearly 70 projects in Lower Austria, Burgenland and Styria, and discusses how the combination of ground-breaking architecture--like the striking silver facade of Steven Holl-designed Loisium winery in Langenlois--and emerging wineries have been changing the face of the Austrian countryside for the past two decades. As Martin Rauchbauer, Deputy Director of the Austrian Cultural Forum, has observed, "The quality of wine architecture in Austria is seen as more than a transitory phenomenon. A new architectural language has developed, which cautiously takes into account traditional forms of building and at the same time presents self-confident interpretations of the requirements of contemporary winemaking."
