This fascinating work is devoted to the fundamental phenomenon in physics – synchronization that occurs in coupled non-linear dissipative oscillators. Examples of such systems range from mechanical clocks to population dynamics, from the human heart to neural networks. The main purpose of this book is to demonstrate that the complexity of synchronous patterns of real oscillating systems can be described in the framework of the general approach, and the authors study this phenomenon as applied to oscillations of different types, such as those with periodic, chaotic, noisy and noise-induced nature.

This book provides a comprehensive and detailed examination of the successes and failures of federalism in a diverse range of multi-ethnic polities and societies. It offers excellent coverage of the experiences of a wide range of contemporary states with specially commissioned contributions from established authorities. An introductory chapter introduces the reader to the nature of federations, the political philosophies that underpin federalism, the characteristics of federal formations, and highlights some of the theories as to why this system of government has failed in some cases to provide ethno-regional stability. A concluding chapter draws upon the findings and examines the prospects for federalism in the light of the acceleration towards greater economic interdependency and local political fragmentation, in the post-Cold War world.

It was published under a pseudonym in the Neue Zeitschrift fur Musik (NZM) of Leipzig in September 1850 and was reissued in a greatly expanded version under Wagners name in 1869. It is regarded by many as an important landmark in the history of German antisemitism. The first version of the article appeared in the NZM under the pseudonym of K. Freigedank ("K. Freethought"). In an April 1851 letter to Franz Liszt, Wagner gave the excuse that he used a pseudonym "to prevent the question being dragged down by the Jews to a purely personal level." At the time Wagner was living in exile in Zurich, on the run after his role in the 1849 revolution in Dresden. His article followed a series of essays in the NZM by his disciple Theodor Uhlig, attacking the music of Meyerbeer's opera Le prophete. Wagner was particularly enraged by the success of Le prophete in Paris, all the more so because he had earlier been a slavish admirer of Meyerbeer, who had given him financial support and used his influence to get Wagners early opera Rienzi, his first real success, staged in Dresden in 1841. Wagner was also emboldened by the death of Mendelssohn in 1847, the popularity of whose conservative style he felt was cramping the potential of German music. Although Wagner had shown virtually no sign of anti-Jewish prejudice previously (despite the claims by Rose in his book Wagner, Race and Revolution, and others), he was determined to build on Uhligs articles and prepare a broadside that would attack his artistic enemies, embedded in what he took to be a populist Judaeophobic context.

This catalogue is the first comprehensive publication on Price's varied oeuvre. It offers an unflinching portrait of contemporary, mediated Western life. The exhibition at Stedelijk Museum is the first survey of the American artist's work.A key theme in Price's work is the self under technological pressure. This is often expressed in terms of the 'skins' of surface, packaging, and wrapping: a photographic study of a person's skin obtained through the technologies Google employs for mapping; a vacuum-formed plastic relief presenting a body part stranded in plastic; a large wall sculpture depicting the negative space between two people engaged in intimate action, greatly enlarged from a tiny internet jpeg.'Seth Price is a key figure in addressing technology and artistic authorship. His work traces an important art historical shift from the concept of collage, where chance played a major role and the image was constructed of multiple layers, to the concept of a unified image, which envelops us in an endless, undifferentiated, digital stream.' - Beatrix Ruf, Director of Stedelijk MuseumPublished on the occasion of the exhibition Seth Price: Social Synthetic, at Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (15 April - 3 September 2017), and at Museum Brandhorst, Munich (12 October 2017 - 18 March 2018).

Waterborne transport is of crucial importance within the European Union. Almost 90% of the EU's external freight trade and 40% of the intra EU-exchanges of goods and passengers are carried by sea. 23 EU Member States are coastal states and 26 are Flag States. EU shipowners manage 30% of the world's vessels and 35% of the global shipping tonnage. Each year, more than 400 million passengers pass through European ports. The Framework of the 'Erika Packages' adds another regulatory level to the existing global legal regime. As a result, almost all aspects of maritime transport and shipping are now regulated by EU Law. EU Maritime Transport Law provides a comprehensive article-by-article analysis of the most relevant of these EU Regulations and EU Directives. The book covers the following issues: The EU and Maritime Transport: A Comprehensive Overview, Regulatory Issues in Shipping, Environmental Policy and Pollution Control, Maritime Safety, Maritime Security and Infrastructure, Consumer Protection and Passenger Rights, Carriage of Goods by Sea and Litigation, Market Access, Competition, State Aid, Maritime Labour and Working Conditions, The Regulation of Inland Waterway Transport.
