Julip follows a bright and resourceful young woman as she tries to spring her brother from a Florida jail—he shot three of her former lovers below the belt. The Seven-Ounce Man continues the picaresque adventures of Brown Dog, a Michigan scoundrel who loves to eat, drink, and chase women, all while sailing along in the bottom 10 percent. The Beige Dolorosa is the haunting tale of an academic who, recovering from the repercussions of a sexual harassment scandal, turns to the natural world for solace. In each of these stories, the irresistible pull of nature becomes a magnificent backdrop for exploring the toughest questions about life and love.

Karlheinz Weinberger's day job may have been relatively uneventful--working in a Siemen's warehouse--but the photos he took in his spare time are anything but conformist. Weinberger's passion, and the focus of this book, is the rebel youth of 1950s and '60s Switzerland, who channeled American rock-'n'-roll culture and made it their own with their rolled-up jeans and denim jackets, bouffant hairdos, striped T-shirts and customized belts boasting images of Elvis and James Dean. Weinberger's lusty, free-spirited and self-confident portraits posit the defiant attitude of youth as a response to the conservative postwar era. Swiss Rebels also includes homoerotic images of rockers, bikers, construction workers and athletes, many of whom occupy positions outside of social norms. This publication is the first to present an overview of Weinberger's provocative oeuvre. Born in 1921, Karlheinz Weinberger was a Swiss photographer whose work predominantly explored outsider cultures. Between 1943 and 1967 Weinberger published photos of male workers, sportsmen and bikers in the gay magazine Der Kreis under the pseudonym of Jim, taken from Hanns Eisler's song "The Ballad of Jim." In the late '50s and early '60s he concentrated on Swiss rock-'n'-roll youth, whom he photographed with both tenderness and a hint of irony. Weinberger placed little emphasis on exhibiting his work; his first comprehensive show took place only in 2000, six years before his death.

A visitor to a small town in the utmost North that has lost its entire population is met by a surprising, subjective vision. The abandoned coal-mining community beneath the mysterious, pyramid-shaped mountain appears to him not as a depressing, man-made scar on the Arctic landscape, but as a formerly harmonious commonwealth where quantity had given way to quality, and where competitive hierarchies had been abolished in favor of equality. It is as if the town's remote location had not been a source of misery, but instead had mad it a self-sufficient community, in both form and content. Here, money was deprived of all meaning and had consequently been abandoned altogether as a medium of transaction. In the visitor's dream-soaked mind, the town had once qualified as a utopia in many respects, not least for having failed to exist. In looking for something nonexistent, it is the searching and the dreaming that matter. This collection of photographs is a ballad to all ways of life, and is dedicated to dreams.

Bucharest in the 1980s. Ceausescu's 'systematisation' programme is in full swing in the Romanian capital: one-third of the historic centre has been wiped out to make way for imposing buildings and wide avenues intended to honour the regime. Despite Ceausescu's particularly dogged approach towards the churches, seven are spared and undergo a process as incredible as it is absurd: they are lifted and placed on rails then moved and hidden behind housing blocks. Withdrawn from the cityscape, they live secret lives interpolated in the disparate architecture that shapes Bucharest's urban landscape today.
