Numerous writers have made declarations of love to cities, but Against Venice speaks not of love, but of dislike. It is a counterblast to intellectuals who regard Venice as the city where existentialism should be experienced, at parties in the palazzi of friends. Debray criticises this world in a refreshingly irreverent way, luring the traveller back to this seductive city.

For many years I have been interested in computer chess and have collected almost every learned paper and article on the subject that I could find. My files are now quite large, and a considerable amount of time, effort and expense has been required to build up this collection. I have often thought how difficult it must be for many computer chess enthusiasts to acquire copies of articles that they see referenced in some other work. Unless one has access to a good reference library, the task is almost impossible. I therefore decided to try to make available, in one volume, as many as possible of the most interesting and important articles and papers ever written on the subject. Such a selection is naturally somewhat subjective, and I hope that I will not offend authors whose works have been excluded. In particular I have decided to exclude any material which has appeared in the Journal of the International Computer Chess Association (ICCA), or in its precursor, the ICCA Newsletter. The reason is simply that the ICCA itself is in the process of compiling a compendium containing the most important material published in those sources. For further information on ICCA membership and publications the reader is invited to contact: Professor H. 1. van den Herik, or Dr Jonathan Schaeffer University of Limburg, Computing Science Dcpaitment, Department of Computer Science University of Alberta, 6200 MD Maastricht Edmonton Netherlands Alberta, Canada T6G 2HI.

Focusing on the relationship between geography and power, this book, originally published in 1990, isolates five sources of political power – might, right, nationhood, legality and legitimacy – and demonstrtes the centrality of geography to the argument of each case. The author stresses the value of geographical expertise to political decision-making and illustrates this through the use of case—studies. His analysis of the sources of power goes deep into an understanding of politics and explores the implications for geography of political thought.

Who Better Than Kanyon?

Chris Kanyon wrestled for nine years in the WCW and WWE, winning the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship and the WCW/WWE World Tag Team Championship with Diamond Dallas Page. His years of prominence in the WWE were from 2001-2004. After being phased out of the WWE in early 2005, Kanyon, during a match in Ontario, Canada, came out as the worlds first active, openly gay professional wrestler. He made several well-known slogans among wrestling fans, including calling himself the Innovator of Offense and frequently saying Who Better than Kanyon? This book focuses on Kanyons struggles to keep his sexuality a secret from his wrestling peers (which ultimately led to a suicide attempt and severe depression) and the building of a WWE wrestler. He takes readers behind the scenes to look at both the moneymaking machine that is the WWE and its political hierarchy, along with explaining how a wrestler is built from the ground up and potentially brought back down to earth.

In his epigrams, Martial (c. 40–c. 103 CE) is a keen, sharp-tongued observer of Roman scenes and events, including the new Colosseum, country life, a debauchee's banquet, and the eruption of Vesuvius. His poems are sometimes obscene, in the tradition of the genre, sometimes affectionate or amusing, and always pointed.
