Expressionism powerfully heralded the onset of the twenties. Today, the buildings that remain demonstrate great creativity with form and skillful use of light, color, and material, highlighting verticality and drama—the essence of the modern metropolis. With Fragments of Metropolis: Berlin, researcher Christoph Rauhut and photographer Niels Lehmann set out to document all the remaining expressionist buildings in Berlin. With Fragments of Metropolis—Rhein | Ruhr, Rauhut and Lehmann present the results of the next phase of this major undertaking, showing that the Rhine-Ruhr region had a similarly rich expressionist heritage. Lehmann’s new photographs are here set alongside drawings, an illustrated index of buildings, and maps that help the reader group the buildings by area, including Bochum, Bottrop, Dortmund, Duisburg, Dsseldorf, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Hagen, Cologne, Mnster, Oberhausen, and more. Simultaneously a celebration of a lost period and a reminder of the riches it has left to us, Fragments of Metropolis—Rhein | Ruhr is a stunning achievement of historical and artistic preservation.

The facade plays a critical role in the conception of energy- and climate-optimized buildings: it is the buildingâs skin and functions as an interface between interior and exterior space. It provides thermal and sound insulation and ventilation, and controls and guides the entrance of daylight into the building. Climate Skin offers concrete planning advice for architects and engineers who wish to exploit not only the architectural potential of facades but also their energy and climate-control possibilities, treating the building envelope as an essential component within a complete climate-control and technology solution. It provides a solid foundation of knowledge that equips the reader to make competent technical and economic evaluations of building envelopes. For everyone concerned with facades, Climate Skin is a comprehensive planning handbook and reference work that covers all of the relevant technical and physical aspects of the design and detailed planning of energy-efficient facades.

With the Bauhaus in Dessau, Water Gropius created a building in 1925/26 that represented a "demonstration of architectural Modernism": (Wolfgang Pehnt). During the few years of its original use as a school with studios, until it was closed down by the Nazis in 1932, it had also become a center of crystallization for the creative forces of its times. Today, the Dessau Bauhaus Foundation again makes the famous building, which has been undergoing extensive restoration since 1997, a center for cultural activities: numerous projects and events at the occasion of the eightieth anniversary of the Bauhaus' foundation in Weimar (1999) and the EXPO 2000 will provide the building with even more public attention. The book documents all phases of the Bauhaus Building's history, use and constructs changes. The authors look at its meaning for contemporary architecture, culture and politics, and describe its history during the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the GDR and up to the present. The themes range from the first architectural design to the future of the Bauhaus as a monument. With contributions by members of the Dessau Bauhaus as well as by independent specialists, and with a picture documentation that also goes back to unpublished materials from the Bauhaus Foundation archives, this multifaceted book represents the new standard volume on the Bauhaus Building.

Perfect for fans of Neil Gaiman, book two in the acclaimed Thickety series is the story of a good witch, a bad witch, and a forest demon, trapped together in a world that is both enchanting and dangerous. After Kara Westfall's village turns on her for practicing witchcraft, she and her brother, Taff, flee to the one place they know they won't be followed: the Thickety. Only this time Kara is magicless without her grimoire and Sordyr, the forest demon, is intent on keeping them there. Kara and Taff will meet other inhabitants of the Thickety in their search for a safe way out, including the infamous witch, Mary Kettle. But can they trust anyone—plant, creature, witch, book, or magic—to help them escape, to undo Grace's final terrible spell, and to stop Sordyr's horrible reach from spreading across the rest of the world? The museum as a building type and architectural space bear a complex relationship to each other. Architecture competes with the exhibited objects on the one hand and gives way to them on the other, enabling the museum to develop as regards content. This manual guide has its point of departure between both poles and targets both designers and users. The aim of the publication is to facilitate communication in the planning process of a museum, whether this is during the conceptual stage, the competition, or the design and construction phase. In addition to an introduction on the architectural history of the museum, the authors examine the key planning parameters involved in the conception and design of a contemporary museum. Buildings and projects provide inspiration for individual design work.0.

Today the convergence of design, engineering and architectural technologies is breeding a new material practice in experimental architecture. The significant emphasis on the structuring logic of tectonics is resulting in a 'new structuralism' in design. In this pioneering publication, this important shift is fully defined as a highly dynamic synthesis of emerging principles of spatial, structural and material ordering integrated through the application of materialisation and fabrication technologies. Providing the foundations for a new theory of structuring in architecture, the new structuralism has broad implications for the way we both conceive and undertake architectural design, as its impact starts to emanate not only across education internationally, but also through architectural research and practice. Sustainability has become a guiding principle of the 21st century. For the architectural office Bob Gysin + Partner BGP Architekten, this is not only an ecological premise but also stimulates and drives its architectural work. They have been setting standards with this approach for 40 years and count among the leaders and pioneers in the European architecture scene. The catalogue presents their modes of thought and methods and provides insight into their planning and implementation practices, which can be attributed to the uniqueness of their projects. It is furthermore an opportunity to address the simultaneous practice of architecture and art and their interconnectedness with sustainability. At the same time it repeatedly succeeds in transgressing boundaries as well as connecting social involvement and cultural relevance with one another.

The international touring exhibition "Die gute Form" was conceived by Max Bill on behalf of the Swiss Werkbund and was shown for the first time in 1949 at the Basel Mustermesse trade fair. The exhibition consisted of 80 display panels, designed by Bill, presenting a selection of consumer goods from all over the world, chosen by Bill as examples of good design. The show caused some upset in Switzerland and fuelled heated debates abroad. But it also exerted a wide-reaching influence - for example, upon the way in which consumer goods were perceived. This publication documents Bill's initiative in reproductions of the original display panels and layout plans for the venues visited by the exhibition, and places Die gute Form in a theoretical context that considers its reception and impact within the history of design.

Marking the centenary of his birth, the "Poster Collection" series devotes its latest edition to the popular Swiss poster designer Herbert Leupin. Primarily conceiving posters for consumer goods, for many years Leupin created advertising for products as diverse as the soft drink Pepita, charcuterie from Grossmetzgerei Bell, and Roth-Händle cigarettes. He helped these and many other companies develop their own brand identity and a recognizable presence in public space. In doing so, he struck the right balance between old-school artist's posters and a methodology for a successful publicity strategy -- and thus bridged the increasingly wide divide between art, graphic design, and advertising.
