It would be unfair to blame a philosophy whose development was brutally interrupted for not being conclusive. But while this openness incited many readers toward other fertile horizons, the oeuvre is hardly ever studied for itself. In this book, Emmanuel Alloa offers a handrail for venturing into the complexities of the work of the French philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961). Through a comprehensive analysis of the three main phases of his thinking and a thorough knowledge of Merleau-Ponty's many unpublished manuscripts, he traces how Merleau-Ponty's philosophy evolved and exposes the remarkable coherence that structures it from within. While stressing two turns Merleau-Ponty's thought underwent--a linguistic turn after 1945 and an ontological turn in the late 1950s, Alloa teases out the continuity of a motive that traverses the entire oeuvre as a common thread. Merleau-Ponty struggled incessantly against any kind of ideology of transparency, whether of the world, the self, of knowledge, or of the self's relation to others. Alloa's innovative reading of this crucially important thinker not only offers a new look at Merleau-Ponty but also shows why the issues he raised are more than ever those of our time.

Raymond Pettibon: Homo Americanus presents over 600 works from every part of the artist's career, the majority of which have never been published before. Arranged thematically in 32 chapters, it charts the appearance and development of the themes that have defined Pettibon's oeuvre. Sections are introduced with excerpts from interviews with the artist, and are further discussed in an appendix by curator Ulrich Loock. Also featured are biographical notes compiled by Lucas Zwirner. This catalogue is the first to tackle Pettibon's work as a whole--as a kind of hive-mind of American culture whose various branches constantly address and reinterpret one another. Of particular interest are Pettibon's own readings of individual works in the book. In excerpts paired with corresponding images, Pettibon guides readers through his complex turns of thought, inviting readers to enter more deeply into his thinking. Published for a major Pettibon retrospective in Europe, the book includes a complete facsimile of his first artist's book, Captive Chains--unavailable for decades--plus early drawings completed with his nephew, record covers, flyers and sections dedicated to collages and drawings from the 1980s to today. This is the definitive Pettibon volume for novices and experts alike.

This book is about the history and future of life and the universe, written at a level that any educated lay-person can understand and enjoy. It describes our place in time and space, how we got here and where we are going. It will take you on a journey from the beginning of time to the end of the universe to uncover our origins and reveal our destiny. It will explain how mankind acquired this knowledge starting from the beginning of civilization when the ancient Greeks first began to ask questions about the nature of the world around them. Ben Moore takes us on a path of discovery that connects astrophysics with subjects as varied as biology, neuroscience and evolution; from the origin of atoms to how stars shine and die, from ants and elephants to space travel and extra-terrestrial life. But as our universe grows older and its stars fade away and stop shining, can life continue for eternity or is all life destined for complete extinction? And what is the purpose of all of this anyway?! On the German edition: "With his public talks and his new book "Elefanten im All" the Brit is on his way of becoming a popstar of science. Moore has a story to tell. The story of everything. From the beginning to the end of our existence. And he does so with esprit and catching passion." Rico Bandle, Weltwoche, 1. November 2012 “The kind of book you come across only every few years.” Artur K. Vogel, Der Bund, September 2012.

Born in Germany in 1945, Anselm Kiefer is one of the most important artists of his generation. His works--encompassing and transcending painting, sculpture, photography, and installation--are epic in both scale and subject matter; in them, Kiefer wrestles with the darkness of German history, unearthing the taboos that underlie the collective past and interweaving them with Teutonic mythology, cosmology, and meditations on the nature of belief. This superbly designed volume, accompanying a major retrospective and including new works especially made for the exhibition, explores the themes that run through Kiefer's oeuvre, from the complex relationship between art and spirituality to the influence of German woodcuts and folklore.

What Roman Signer terms his 'small and large happenings' have secured him an international reputation. His spectacular events involve dynamite, combustion, and explosions.Organized as a reader, this publication examines Signer's oeuvre since the 1970s, pulling together texts from different periods on heterogeneous aspects of his body of work for the first time.Articles include specialist analyses of specific pieces and topical essays treating fundamental issues linked to his radical understanding of sculpture and the attendant philosophical questions it raises.Published on the occasion of the exhibition in 2014-15 at the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen and KINDL - Zentrum für zeitgenössische Kunst, Berlin.English and German text.
